Introduction
With the support of a Together for Sudan
scholarship funded by the Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund (GMCTF) Asma
Ismail Tawir was able to complete her studies and with her graduation
this year, after six years of study from Ahfad University, achieve her dream of becoming a medical
doctor. Here is her statement of appreciation and aspiration which she
wrote to us.
"A Chinese proverb says “Instead of giving a hungry man a fish, teach him fishing”. And that is exactly what Together for Sudan has done for me. My medical studies – which GMCTF funding through Together for Sudan – have given me not just a bit of wisdom but lots of wisdom and candles now lighting my life and outlining the future for me. I am so grateful to you all for this support and consider myself really lucky to receive a scholarship which was the changing point in my life for it offered to me that which I had only dreamed about. Becoming a medical doctor was nearly an impossible goal for me but Allah sent to me this marvellous gift and the dream has become a reality.
In 2001 I entered the School of Medicine at Ahfad University for Women in Omdurman where the scholarship which was provided gave me “pushes and wishes” to work hard. I would never have been able to pay even a quarter of the cost of this education if the Gordon Memorial College Trust Fund had not helped me through Together for Sudan by paying £5,000 per year for my education. Throughout the six years of my studies TFS followed me closely and in April 2008 I graduated as a medical doctor. In October 2008 I shall begin my housemanship training.
I wish to express my great thanks to TFS, starting with Victor in the
TFS Khartoum office who was the connecting hand between me and the
organization. I would also like to say thank you to Izdihar who was
always at the university helping solve any problems we students
encountered. Also, I thank all members of Together for
Dr. Asma Ismail Tawir"
Together for Sudan would like to congratulate Dr Asma and wish her well with her career..
